Compassionate Guidance in Child Custody and Support Matters

Issues relating to children are often the most difficult and stressful aspects of a divorce. But through careful planning, negotiation and cooperation, we can reach an agreement that works for the whole family.

Storm Family Law, P.C., is ready to help you work toward a favorable outcome while minimizing stress and conflict.

Working Together on a Parenting Plan

Whenever possible, judges want parents to work together to create what’s known as a parenting plan. This is a formal agreement detailing:

  • Which parent the children will be with at which times (including important holidays and birthdays)
  • Who needs to be involved in major life decisions on behalf of the children
  • Any special rules or stipulations agreed upon by both parties
  • How the two parents will resolve disputes that arise or make future changes to the agreement

A Parenting Plan Vs. Court Intervention

Agreeing on a parenting plan can be difficult but doing so gives each parent more control over the outcome of the custody proceedings than letting the court decide. That being said, we understand that a cooperative approach is not always possible, particularly in high-conflict situations, or if there has been domestic violence. Whether you create a parenting plan or request a custody order, our firm is here to guide you and advocate for you and your children every step of the way.

The Basics of Child Support

Child support in California is a calculation based on a formula often called Guideline Support. One or both parents may be asked to pay child support after submitting information about their incomes from nearly all sources, their expenses, add-ons to support, perquisites, what percentage of time they will be spending with their child or children (per the custody order), and any special financial needs the children may have.

Whether you are seeking support or being asked to pay, our focus will be on giving the court the most accurate picture of your finances so that the support award is appropriate.
